10/09/06 First Team sail through to next round of FA Cup after beating Oxford United Print E-mail

The first team pulled off an unbelievable smash’n’grab raid in Oxford to move into the next round of the FA Cup. Wycombe won 6-1, but manager Graham Malcolm was struggling to explain quite how it had happened. “If we played them again we would never see a scoreline like it – in fact we could lose 6-1!”
In the first half Blues had seven chances and scored six of them. Oxford United had a lot of possession, and really out-played Wanderers in the first half, but weren’t able to convert their chances. Sam Barwood had a good game in goal, and the whole team closed down quickly making clear shooting opportunities rare. Su Oakley scored the first three, one on her own, running through between two central defenders, the second a header from Hannah Wilson’s cross and the third from Leah Asante’s centre.
Hazel Knight came through late at the back post to convert a corner and Heather Scutchings lobbed the keeper from 25 yards, before the young Oxford team capitalised on a mistake at the back to make it 5-1. Then Asante picked up a through ball from Charlee Clarke and beat the keeper one-on-one with her left-footed strike – all before the half time whistle!
Still reeling, Oxford had some early success in the second half, but were unable to beat Barwood and as the game went on, the mountain grew too steep to climb. Wycombe made a couple of chances but they went begging as the second half drew to a close as a goalless draw.
FINAL SCORE: WWLFC 6 OXFORD UNITED 1
Managers POM: Heather Scutchings
