WWLFC 1st team beat Southampton in their first game of the season 3-2. Wycombe 3--2 Southampton.
Wycombe kicked off the new season at their new home - Loudwater Football Club - with a well fought win.
The team got off to a great start playing high tempo football which caused Southampton all sorts of problems. Wycombe went close several times but were thwarted by some good goalkeeping. Eventually the pressure told, and Su, picking up where she left off last season, coolly slotted home the opening goal. With Wycombe 1 goal up, the pressure was increasing in the Southampton goal area. Chances came and went until Su scored 2 more goals before the half ended.
However, the second half was a different story with Southampton making some tactical changes. They began to pour forward, stretching Wycombe's midfield and defense. With Southampton causing mayhem in the Wycombe half, and Wycombe unable to retain the ball, Southampton were eventually awarded with a penalty. The penalty was brilliantly saved by Katie, only for the ref to announce a re-take. Fortunately for Wycombe, the re-take went over the bar and Wycombe were able to re-group.
Southampton did get 2 deserved goals in quick succession to make the final minutes very tense. However, Wycombe held on for 3 valuable points.
Lack of players throughout the summer, resulting in a lack of pre season friendlies was undoubtedly a factor to this game, but with great spirit the team came through and will be stronger for the next game.
Some good performances from Katie, Sophie and Louise, a fine debut from Collette and Jade all bodes well.
P.O.M. Su Oakley.
